West Bengal Cyber Crime Wing Dismantles Scam Call Centres

On 31st January 2025, based on credible information, the Cyber Crime Wing of West Bengal Police (South Zone) discovered an illegal call center operating at Room No. 1103, 11th Floor, Block-5, Southwinds, Chowhati, PS-Sonarpur, Baruipur PD. The call center was involved in cheating innocent citizens of the USA under the guise of providing Microsoft technical support.

A team, led by WB Cyber Crime Wing , along with Baruipur Cyber Crime PS personnel, raided the premises and conducted a thorough search.

Modus Operandi:

The call center operated by sending fraudulent pop-ups to victims’ computers, claiming that unethical browsing had caused system errors, and offering paid technical support packages under the false name of Microsoft. Payments were made to US bank accounts and converted into cryptocurrency (USDT, Bitcoin, Ethereum), which was then transferred to the principal accused,via China.

Additionally, the miscreants posed as agents of the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), threatening victims with penalties and jail time for alleged unusual activities linked to Russia, demanding large payments via US bank accounts, which were then converted into cryptocurrency and funneled to the accused.

The principal accused also involved in converting cryptocurrency into Indian currency and managing cross-border illegal funds.

Arrests: Three individuals were arrested.

Seizures:

05 laptops, 05 mobile phones, 02 routers, 07 headphones, scripts, and logos of the US Department of Homeland Security.

Cryptocurrency wallet addresses (Trust Wallet, Exodus) with transaction records totaling approximately Rs. 10 crores in the last two years.

Multiple bank accounts linked to the crime with balances in lakhs.

One Audi A4 (WB02AT/ 2624) worth Rs. 52 lakhs seized from accused.

The investigation is progressing, and further arrests are expected.
